How is the sari made?

Banarasi silk sari is a popular Indian fashion textile, traditionally worn by women from Banaras (Varanasi), India. It is believed to have been created in the 12th century by knotting multiple threads of raw silk into a seamless fabric. It has become an iconic symbol of Hinduism, as it is associated with temples and devout devotion.

According to Forbes, the market for banarasi silk sari in India totalled $3 billion and imported south Asian silk saris are favoured by “a growing number of global fashion customers”.

This article lists 10 top facts about the banarasi sari and what they imply about its appeal as well as strategic importance to both India’s economy and its culture.

  1. Banarasi Silk Sari is an Indian fashion textile, manufactured in Varanasi, India. Banarasi saris are made from raw silk, typically comprising three to twelve narrow “pallus” (“pallu” in Hindi) about wide and six metres long, which are woven together with three to five thread double ikkat (“ikat” in Hindi) technique.
  2. The double ikkat technique involves twisting the yarn before dyeing it to achieve a pattern; this process is called mordanting and helps fix the colour permanently. The double ikkat technique originated in Gujarat and was brought to Varanasi by a weaver from Saurastra in 12th century.
  3. Each pallu is knotted separately to create a composite textile using the three-ply yarn. The knotting method used is called “Vishwakarma”, an ancient decorative art form which has been practised in Varanasi for over 1000 years. The Vishwakarma technique of knotting involves tying over 200,000 knots per sari, to form a single long strip of fabric prior to dyeing and weaving.
  4. Banarasi saris are considered to be the finest in India and some of the most intricate fabrics in the world. The raw silk used to create banarasi saris is divided into 12 strands, each of which is individually dyed with more than 50 different natural dyes.
  5. The dyeing process takes eight hours and uses a wood-based cord as a dying agent, which allows more colour to be absorbed by the silk so that each “pallu” exhibits bright, pure colours. The individual strand of silk is then woven using two double threads for every one warp thread, creating a fabric with three layers.
  6. The three layers of the banarasi sari are then woven into one continuous fabric, and the weaving is completed by twisting the pieces together with a plain and very fine yarn. The end result is a fabric which can be pulled apart from both sides, with no knots visible, which means that it is seamless.
  7. The pattern for each pallu is created by folding and knotting different lengths of thread to create the number of pallus required to weave the final rectangular cotton piece. This process is called “mordanting”. Each pallu dyes differently (i.e., in red, green or blue), with each colour used in only one pallu – hence the term “variegation”. Variegated patterns are created by knotting thread of contrasting colours, instead of applying dyes. The final colour is determined by dyeing the fabric.
  8. The banarasi sari is usually worn in five different ways: “Saptahika” (seven pleats), “Vamsa” (a pleat in the centre), “Chandrika” (half-fold), “Asan” (the pallu is thrown over the left shoulder) and “Avahana” (the pallu is thrown over one shoulder with the end flowing down)

Conclusion

When you’re looking to buy a Banarasi silk saree online, there’s no need to go through the hassle of visiting multiple stores and trying on different sarees.
