The NordVPN Chrome addon rapidly hides your IP address. The extension unblocks US Netflix, but it doesn’t encrypt your traffic as well as the main NordVPN programme, and it lacks other security features.
In fact, NordVPN Chrome addon has over a million users.
We examined the NordVPN Chrome extension to see how it compares to the core NordVPN programme and other VPN browser extensions.This post will teach you how to use NordVPN with Chrome. Our guide will show you how to download and install NordVPN on Chrome and what to do if it doesn’t work.We’ll also reveal some cheaper or more feature-rich VPNs for Chrome.
Is NordVPN Chrome Extension Useful?
The NordVPN Chrome plugin aims to disguise your genuine IP address from websites you visit in Chrome. But it just encrypts traffic within your browser.NordVPN Chrome is a stripped-down version of the NordVPN app. It works as a proxy to change your IP address and access blocked websites. The plugin will encrypt and conceal your Chrome activity from your ISP, but not your device traffic.
In our tests, NordVPN Chrome was speedy and simple to use. However, the lack of device-wide encryption makes it much less safe than the complete VPN and other competing VPN extensions for Chrome.The Chrome add-on is part of a NordVPN subscription that covers up to six devices.
To secure your Chrome browsing, we recommend skipping the Chrome extension and using the entire NordVPN application.
SSLv1.3 Encryption in the NordVPN Chrome Extension
The full NordVPN app encrypts all traffic with AES-256 and offers OpenVPN and Wireguard connection methods. This is the most secure consumer VPN service.
The Chrome extension of NordVPN safeguards your communication using TLS v1.3, the same technology used to encrypt HTTPS websites. See our test findings in the image below:Our tests revealed that requests were encrypted between the extension and NordVPN server.
We didn’t see any unencrypted DNS lookups for websites in Chrome. In the TLS handshake with NordVPN servers, we could see a DNS lookup for the NordVPN domain. We could also see non-chrome traffic.
The NordVPN Chrome app encrypts your browser traffic, but it doesn’t encrypt anything else. Your genuine IP address may be revealed if you download something that runs in another application, like a torrent file.
Chrome extensions can be dangerous. Despite 239 million users, Hola VPN’s Chrome addon was withdrawn from the Chrome Web Store in 2021 owing to malware concerns.
Results of Zero-Logs Policy and IP Leak Testing
However, the addon is still private. NordVPN no logs policy has been audited twice by an independent company. The same rule applies to the extension Chrome.IP, DNS, and WebRTC leaks are more common in VPN browser extensions than in entire apps. We used the Chrome plugin to connect to a NordVPN server and then tested our public IP address.

Chrome Security Improvements
The browser extension is much lighter than the core app. It doesn’t let you choose VPN encryption techniques, city-level servers, or double VPN.
There is no VPN kill switch, which is critical for privacy and security. But it has some more security features beyond the standard proxy:
- WebRTC stutters. WebRTC is used by Chrome and Firefox for video conferencing and file sharing, although it is vulnerable to IP leaks. Using NordVPN Chrome, you can completely block WebRTC.
- omit list You can define which websites you want to bypass the proxy. This function, like VPN split tunnelling, is useful if a website requires your genuine IP address or location to validate your identity.
- Adblocker. NordVPN Chrome has an option to ban pop-ups and autoplay videos. It also prevents malicious websites.
Fast local and international connections.
The NordVPN Chrome extension is as fast as the NordVPN desktop app. Because the browser addon’s encryption is weaker, it should be faster.
We measured our average download speeds before and after connecting to a NordVPN server using the Chrome addon to see how much it slowed our connection. Here is our test results table:
|NordVPN Server Location||Avg. Download Speed (Mbps)||Avg. Speed Loss (%)|
|UK (Nearby Server)||98.17||2.87%|
We found that using NordVPN Chrome addon has very little effect on your connection speed, especially when connecting to servers near to your physical location.
We measured an average speed loss of just 4.58% when connecting from the UK to the US with the chrome extension, compared to losses of 21% for the same connection on the app.
That means NordVPN Chrome is just as fast as the full NordVPN app on local connections, but slightly faster when connecting to servers internationally.
