PNB Rock, famed for his 2016 song “Selfish,” was tragically shot during a heist in South Los Angeles on Monday, law enforcement sources told The Times.
Capt. Kelly Muniz of the Los Angeles Police Department stated a shooting happened around 1:15 p.m. The victim was unnamed.
Rakim Allen, 30, was in the restaurant with his girlfriend, who shared a location-tagged photo on Instagram.
Muniz said a gunman demanded a sack from the victim inside the restaurant. Rock’s jewelry was stolen, according to sources.
Muniz stated that the robber instantly shot the victim.
“He shot the guy and went to a getaway car,” she claimed.
Muniz said the victim died at 1:59 p.m.
LAPD police are scrutinizing restaurant surveillance video to identify the shooter, a source said. They’re also searching nearby businesses for security footage of the suspect departing on foot or in a vehicle.
On Monday night, Muniz added, investigators processed evidence. She wouldn’t say what was found.
Philadelphia-born Rock was born on Dec. 9, 1991. He told Paper Magazine that Drake’s “Take Care” album inspired him at age 19.
Rock’s ability to integrate melodies with rapping made him ideal for hip-next hop’s phase. His 2015 hit “Fleek” became an anthem for women sprucing up around the country. Ed Sheeran and Chance the Rapper collaborated on “Cross Me.”
In 2016, he and Atlanta rapper YFN Lucci released the anthem “Everyday We Lit.” This was the highest-charting song for either artist, reaching No. 33 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“What do you name yourself when you still rap?” he said in 2017. I’m not a rapper, but I’m not a vocalist either. I’m not playing wildly. Is Chris Brown singing? Nope. I like melodies.
“Selfish” topped the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 51. “Luv Me Again” is Rock’s latest single.
Authorities claim “follow-home” robberies and other violent occurrences are escalating.
Bashar Barakah Jackson, who was known as the Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke, was killed in February 2020 when someone broke into his home.
Authorities think his attackers found him because someone posted a picture of a black gift bag with his address on social media.
Southeast Community Police Station, which handles the case from Monday, has seen 34 homicides so far this year, compared to 35 at the same time last year.
The number of robberies increased by 25.2%, from 373 to 467.
In a Sept. 2 broadcast of “Off the Record with DJ Akademiks,” Rock discussed robbery attempts in Los Angeles.
The rapper stated he was robbed on Fairfax Avenue “mid-pandemic.”
Rock: “My hometown likes sneaky thieves.” “They’re bold in L.A.”
Rock and the host discussed robberies targeting rappers.
Rock: “I’ve never been robbed.” I don’t like saying never, so I won’t. not superstitious, yet I’ve never been robbed.
Akademiks: “That’s why L.A.’s creepy.” “It’s daring. I’m watching crazy footage; they don’t do it at night. “Like darkness, yet daylight is when they do it.
After his brother’s death, Rock became more on alert and aware of how quickly a situation could become lethal.
Rock: “Something in me told me this was real.” I’ve witnessed deaths. I’ve seen death. “Everyone dies.”
