Russian army columns entered Ukraine early Thursday, and airstrikes rocked Kyiv, and dozens of other locations as President Vladimir Putin authorized an attack toppling the Kyiv administration and demilitarising the country.
NATO’s secretary-general called the Russian attack “brutal” and said the military alliance has responded with defence measures.
- Officials claimed that initial strikes targeted military bases, airfields, and government buildings.
- Ukraine’s border service attacked its forces in Crimea, Russia, and Belarus.
- Seaport Mariupol was heavily shelled. Attack Kyiv’s airport, and air raid sirens sounded.
- Ukraine reported downing five Russian jets and one chopper. Russia denied any planes were hit.
Assaulting Ukraine without provocation or justification, President Biden promised more action against Russia.
Markets were roiled by war. Stocks plummeted, and Brent crude oil surpassed $100 per barrel for the first time since 2014.
