CBS46 News in Atlanta said that Braves left fielder Marcell Ozuna was arrested for DUI this morning in Gwinnett County, Georgia.
The outfielder was taken into custody by the police for driving under the influence and failing to stay in his lane. After being arrested at around 4:00 a.m., the 31-year-old was taken into custody and lodged in the Gwinnett County Jail.
David O’Brien of The Athletic has verified the report. About eight o’clock in the morning, he said, Ozuna was freed on a $1,830 bond.
In a statement released on Friday, the Atlanta Braves said, “We are aware of Marcell Ozuna’s arrest this morning and are still gathering all the facts pertaining to the incident.” This was reported by Jeff Schultz of The Athletic. Everyone in our company is extremely saddened by the current events. There will be no further comment from us until the legal process is over, as this is a matter of public record.
Similarly, Ozuna issued a brief statement in which he admitted, “I disappointed my team. We were all very dissatisfied with me. To be honest, I’m at a loss for words. This is something that needs to be settled in court.
A little over a year prior to his current arrest, Ozuna was taken into custody for domestic violence after a video surfaced showing him choking his wife. After reviewing the footage from the officer’s body camera, prosecutors dropped the charges against him in July to two misdemeanours.
Ozuna was suspended for the final 20 games of the 2021 season after being hit with administrative leave following the charges. He came back to the Braves and played with them in ’22.
In February of 2021, Ozuna inked a $65 million deal with Atlanta for four years of service. About $41 million is still owed to him.
